The biology of transmission
The award winning Biology of Transmission campaign explains to gay men how HIV infection occurs via the rectum during anal sex.
Aim of the campaign
To give men clear information about the most common way gay men become infected with HIV (through being the receptive partner in anal sex).
Message of the campaign
The campaign had 3 key messages –
- The rectal lining absorbs semen and pre cum containing HIV
- The rectal lining can be damaged when objects enter the rectum allowing HIV easier entry through breaks in it
- How (often unnoticed) sexually transmitted infections make it easier for HIV to be passed on due to skin damage inside the rectum
Target audience
Gay and Bisexual Men and Men who have sex with men.
Materials supporting the campaign
- A4 posters, 3 executions (sponge, eggs, peach)
- Wallet containing a card featuring the “sponge” campaign message about absorbency
- Condom packs
- A6 28 page booket “Ready for action” – revised and reprinted
