Lube

Water-based vs oil-based

Using lubricant will make sex more comfortable. Using oil-based lubricant (like Vaseline or baby oil) weakens condoms in seconds, making them more likely to split.  Water-based (or silicone-based) lube doesn’t weaken condoms and should be used with ALL condoms (including Durex Avanti Ultima). You can buy this lube in chemists, gay shops or online.

Water-based

  • KY
  • Wet Stuff
  • Liquid Silk
  • ID
  • Astroglide
  • Probe
  • Lubrifist & J-Lube (both for fisting)

Oil-based

  • Vaseline
  • Baby oil
  • Hand cream
  • Moisturiser
  • Anything from the kitchen (creams, oils or fats such as Crisco)
  • Hair products
  • Soap, shower gel
  • Lubes with 'cream' in their name e.g. ID Cream, Elbow Grease

Silicone-based lubricants (like Eros) are also for sale.  These are OK with condoms and a lot more slippery than water-based lubes. But they can stain bedding, etc. and will damage sex toys also made of slicone.

Spit as lube isn’t a good idea. There’s never enough and it quickly dries up, making it more likely a condom will break.

Using lube

  1. Use plenty
Put lots of lube on the condom-covered cock and in and around the arsehole.  This will mean the condom will be less likely to break or come off inside the arse.
  2. Keep lube on not under the condom
Avoid lube getting on the cock before the condom goes on as lube under the condom makes it more likely to slide off.
  3. No Nonoxynol-9
Some lubes might contain a spermicide called Nonoxynol-9 (N-9).  A spermicide kills sperm and is an added protection against pregnancy. Nonoxynol-9 can cause irritation to the inside lining of the arse and make it more likely HIV is passed on. So it’s best avoided in lubes or on condoms. Packaging should say if a product contains it.
